College of the Canyons ran into a hot team and a hot pitcher Wednesday at West Los Angeles College and the result was a 3-0 Mountain Valley Conference loss for Canyons.

The win left West L.A. half a game behind Canyons in the MVC. The Cougars (5-2-1, 14-9-1) came into the game ranked No. 8 in Southern California while West L.A. (5-3, 19-6) brought in an eight-game winning streak including capturing the West L.A. Tournament title last week.

Sophomore right-hander Lee Carballo only walked eight men last season for the Oilers and his control was flawless as usual. He allowed just five singles, struck out three, and didn’t walk anybody.

Frank Halcovich (5-3) didn’t pitch a bad game for Canyons, either. He held West L.A. scoreless for five innings before the Oilers got an unearned run in the sixth.

West L.A. added two insurance runs in the seventh inning. Tim Vaughn doubled and scored on a single by Gayron Jackson. Jackson took second on the throw to the plate, stole third, and scored when the throw to third went into left field.

L.A. Harbor 8, Pierce 2

Five Pierce College errors led to seven unearned runs for Harbor in a Metro Conference game at Pierce.

Tom Price got the win in relief for the Seahawks (7-2, 19-8), who entered the game as the No. 2-ranked team in Southern California. Steve Reed (2-3) took the loss for Pierce (4-5, 7-10). Tom Grant led the Brahmas with two singles, a triple, and an RBI.
