Santa Ana Wins in 11 Innings

Pinch-runner Lia Machado scored in the bottom of the 11th inning Wednesday to lift the Santa Ana College softball team to a 1-0 victory over Orange Coast in a South Coast Conference game played at Santa Ana.

Machado was rounding third on Sam Arledge’s one-out single but decided not to attempt to score. She returned to third but came on to score when the Pirates picked Lisa Gotfrey off at second.

The teams are tied for second place in conference with 4-2 records. The Dons are 25-2 overall.

In other South Coast Conference action:

Cypress 4, Golden West 0--Roxane Arden pitched an eight-hitter with four strikeouts to lead the Chargers past the Rustlers at Cypress. Lisa Kulok went 3 for 3 with two RBIs to help the Chargers improve to 2-4 in conference (18-11 overall). Golden West is 3-3 in conference.

In nonconference action:

Fullerton 4, Long Beach City 0--Lisa Fresquez went the distance on a two-hitter and struck out eight to lead the Hornets past the Vikings at Long Beach City. Carla Williams hit a two-run triple in the third inning and Liz Carter homered in the second for Fullerton (19-4).
