Cal State Northridge junior Kathy Slaten pitched back-to-back shutouts on the opening day of the Libby Matson Invitational Softball Tournament at the University of the Pacific.

Northridge defeated U.S. International University, 5-0, and University of California, 1-0.

Slaten improved her record to 28-5, scattering three hits in each game. The 5-5, 140-pounder struck out 10 against USIU and eight against Cal in registering her 18th and 19th shutouts of the season.

In the first game, Slaten was backed by productive hitting from Terry Lamoree, who was 2 for 3 with a home run and two runs batted in, and Michey McAnany, who also had two hits and two RBIs.
