Junior Colleges HIGHLIGHTS : Callahan, Dale Lead Valley, 5-1

Terry Callahan struck out five in five innings of hitless relief Thursday to give Valley College a 5-1 win at West Los Angeles College.

The Monarchs (8-6, 15-13-1) closed to within a half game of West L.A. (8-5, 22-9) in the battle for second place in the Mountain Valley Conference. Canyons (10-2), which was idle, leads West L.A. by 2 1/2 games.

Shortstop Ron Dale got a hit in the middle of all three Valley rallies. He doubled in the first to drive in Tim Riley, who had singled. In the third, Jeff Gieseke and Dale singled, and both scored on a WLAC throwing error.

Dale opened the fifth with a double and scored, along with Bobby Hernandez, on a double by Chris Haslock.

Mission 7, Antelope Valley 5

Mission (2-10-1, 5-15-1) got six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning on a walk, two errors, a squeeze bunt by Jim Tapper and RBI singles by David Peskin, Jack Moore, Darryl Butler and Bob Smith.

Taft 8, Moorpark 5

Taft scored five times in the ninth inning as three Moorpark pitchers gave up five walks.

The win broke a tie between the teams for second place in the Western State Conference, 1 1/2 games behind Oxnard.
