College Baseball : Aztecs Lose to New Mexico in Opener, Win Nightcap

University of New Mexico right-hander Dean Duane, who leads NCAA Division 1 pitchers in wins, improved his record to 13-0 by shutting out San Diego State, 3-0, in the first game of a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader at Albuquerque. The Aztecs came back to win the nightcap, 3-2.

Duane allowed eight hits in his second win of the season against the Aztecs. The Lobos scored all three of their runs in the third inning on a two-run single by Greg Hall and a run-scoring hit by John Snyder.

Freshman Mike Erb (7-4) gave up just four hits but was the losing pitcher.

In the second game, the Aztecs barely held on to a 3-0 lead.

San Diego State took a 1-0 advantage in the fifth inning on triples by Mark Grace and Mark Holvey. A bases-empty home run by Steve Hill, his fifth homer of the year, and Grace’s RBI single in the sixth made it 3-0.

Steve Sparks had an RBI single in the sixth for the Lobos, and Jim Fregosi added a run-scoring single in the eighth for the final margin.

Staring pitcher Dave Provencher (4-1) worked the first 5 innings to gain the victory. Tim Arnsberger came on in the ninth inning to get the final three outs for his first save of the year. Left-hander Bret Davis (9-2) was the loser.

The Lobos are 13-5 and in first place in the WAC Southern Division, 41-12 overall. San Diego State (6-12 and 42-26-1) is in fourth.

SDSU plays its final series of the season when it travels to Hawaii. The four-game, three-day set begins May 3.

Chapman 9-3, University of San Diego 3-0--The Panthers used power to sweep the Toreros in this nonconference doubleheader at Orange. Scott Lockwood’s three-run double keyed a five-run first inning in the opener. Scott Von Eps hit a solo home run in the fourth, and Eli Amaya added a two-run homer in the seventh. Steve Dunn (1-4) was the starter and winner for Chapman. Catcher Jeff Grotewald hit a two-run homer for USD.

A three-run homer by Chapman’s Dan Skarshaug in the seventh gave winning pitcher Mike Lomeli all the offense he needed in the nightcap. The sweep gives the Panthers an 18-26 record. USD is 14-34-1.
