After a slow start, Mount Carmel High School’s third-ranked baseball team is beginning to put it all together.

The Sundevils, last year’s San Diego Section 3-A runners-up, won for the eighth straight time Tuesday, 4-3, over Vista in nine innings.

The victory boosted Mt. Carmel’s (8-1 and 16-6) lead to 1 1/2 games over second-place Vista (7-3 and 14-6) in the Palomar League.

The Sundevils opened a 3-0 lead after 4 1/2 innings Tuesday behind their ace Dave Schiesser and appeared to be on their way to an easy win. But the Panthers rallied to tie with two runs in the fifth and one in the seventh when Roger Price scored with two outs on a passed ball.

But, in the ninth, Schiesser hit a leadoff homer to provide the winning margin and put Mt. Carmel on the verge of clinching a playoff spot.
