Canyons, Valley Open Regionals in State JC Baseball Tourney

College of the Canyons and Valley College make bids for the state title as regional play in the California Community College Baseball Tournament begins at 11 a.m. today.

College of the Canyons, the Mountain Valley conference champion, will play Long Beach City College, the Metro champion, at Long Beach. The Cougars (25-12-1) are looking for their third state title in five years. COC won the 1981 and 1983 state titles and were the runners-up in 1982.

Long Beach and College of the Canyons have met once this season, at the Casey Stengel Tournament, which Long Beach won, 10-6. Chris Pollack (8-1) will start for COC.

Valley College travels to Oxnard in its first appearance in the state playoffs since 1982. That year, the Monarchs (20-15-1) swept the state title in four games. Valley earned the Mountain Valley conference’s first wild-card berth by winning its final five conference games to finish the conference season with a 13-7 record. Valley has won 12 of its last 17.

Valley met Oxnard twice this season. They tied, 5-5, in the first meeting and Oxnard wons the second, 10-2.

California Cup at Moorpark College

The Field Hockey Federation will play host to the California Cup, an international tournament, today through Monday at Moorpark College.

Teams from Taiwan, Mexico and Canada will play at least five games against several California teams, including 20 teams from Ventura County.

The games played this weekend will determine the playoff pairings. On Monday, elimination games are scheduled for the morning, and championship games for the early afternoon. Gold, silver and bronze medals will be awarded to the top teams in eight divisions.

Volleyball Held at Chatsworth

Volleyball competition, for beginners and intermediates, is featured at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays at the Chatsworth Recreation Center at 22360 Devonshire St., Chatsworth. Recreation play is free for all participants.

Kaplan Tops CSUN Honors

Cal State Northridge first baseman Paul Kaplan was chosen as the team’s most valuable player, topping the list of Matador team awards.

Kaplan, a senior right-hander, finished at .410 with 12 home runs, 46 runs batted in and 19 doubles. He also earned All-CCAA and All-District 8 honors. Kaplan’s 19 doubles places him fifth in the Matador record book for most doubles in a season.

Catcher Scott McIntrye was honored as the first recipient of the Kent Testerman Most Inspirational Award. McIntrye was a reserve catcher who hit .370 in 11 games with four doubles and eight RBIs.

The award is named after former CSUN team member Kent Testerman who was killed in an auto accident last summer.

Other awards went to: most improved, Jeremy Hernandez; best defense (infield), Tom McKay; best defense (outfield), Bryant Long; most outstanding pitcher, Steve Sharts, Glen Braybrooks and Tom Harmon.

City Sponsors 10K, 5K Runs

The City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks will sponsor 10K and 5K runs June 2 at Northridge Recreation Center, 18300 Lemarsh St., Northridge.

This is the department’s second annual “Salute to Recreation” race. Last year’s 10K winners were John Sutherland in the men’s division, at 32:49, and Lisa Peterson in the women’s, at 43:16.

Clinic for Soccer Coaches

Marwan Ass’ad, the Cal State Northridge soccer coach, is offering a free coaches clinic every Wednesday at the CSUN campus until June 26. The clinic, which runs from 6 to 9 p.m., is open to all soccer coaches.

Sunland-Tujunga Golf

The Sunland-Tujunga Chamber of Commerce annual golf tournament will begin with an 11 a.m. shotgun start on Monday, June 10, at the La Canada Country Club, 5500 N. Godbey Dr., La Canada.

The $40 entry fee includes lunch. Reservations must be in before June 1.
