Lawrence Hom has been named CIF 4-A volleyball player of the year, heading the All-CIF team that includes three other South Bay selections: Cass Cowell of Mira Costa on first team, Mark Goodale of Palos Verdes on second team and Derek Washington of Inglewood on third team. Dave Ott of Bishop Montgomery was a first team 3-A selection, with teammate Jimmy Komick on the second. All are seniors. The 3-A player of the year is Parker Blackman, a junior from Loyola.

El Camino College will host the deciding game in the World Cup qualifier soccer tournament at 8 p.m. Friday against Costa Rica. The U.S. leads the round robin tournament by a point and needs a victory or tie to advance to the next regional. The gates open at 6 p.m.

Santa Monica’s Sam Blood has been named Bay League volleyball player of the year, topping the coaches’ all-league team. Other first teamers are Cass Cowell, Brad Johnson and Mike Doll of Mira Costa, Ross Boelsen of Redondo, Mark Goodale and Henrik Kjaer of Palos Verdes, Mike O’Reilly of South Torrance and Mike Badt of Santa Monica. Second team selections are Brice Stella of West Torrance, John Dietz of Mira Costa, Scott Mumby and Tom Melton of Palos Verdes, Peter Franke and Steve Abee of Santa Monica, Carl Schneider of Redondo and Matt Whitney of South Torrance.

All-CIF center-forward Mark Sutherlin from Serra High has signed a basketball letter of intent with Cal State Northridge. The 6-5, 230-pound Sutherlin, a member of The Times’ All-South Bay team, averaged 16 points and 12 rebounds for the Cavaliers, Camino Real league champs.

The Long Beach Convention Center will host its first baseball card and sports memorabilia show Saturday and Sunday, with scheduled autograph appearances by Dodger pitcher Orel Hershiser and former Dodgers player and TV star Chuck Connors. Show hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. Hershiser is scheduled to appear from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Connors is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday.

South Torrance (Bay League), Hawthorne (Ocean) and Miraleste (Pioneer) are among 58 CIF Southern Section schools named sportsmanship winners for the school year. Representatives of the schools will be honored June 3 at Dodger Stadium before the Dodgers-Mets game.
