CSUN: A SEASON OF SUCCESS

About 400 athletes participated in 18 intercollegiate athletic programs at Cal State Northridge during the 1984-85 season. They were among the most successful in Matador history.

Titles and Awards in 1984-85

Softball and men’s swimming teams won national championships.

Six teams won conference championships.

Five coaches were named coach of the year.

53 athletes earned All-American status.

Four athletes combined to win six individual national titles.

Five earned awards as the conference’s Most Valuable Player.

Highlights

Pete Accardy’s swim team won its fifth consecutive national title, winning four individual national championships in the process. His women’s team finished second in the nation for the second year in a row.

Gary Torgeson’s softball team won its third straight national title.

Bill Webb’s men’s track team was seventh in the nation.

Craig Witcher’s men’s tennis team was ninth nationally.

Marwan Ass’ad’s soccer team made it to the national quarterfinals.

Pete Cassidy’s basketball team, picked no higher than sixth in pre-season CCAA polls, won the conference and advanced to the championship game of the West Regional before losing.

Walt Ker’s women’s volleyball team finished second in the nation.

Women’s gymnastics team placed seventh in the nation.

Women’s tennis team finished eighth in the nation.

The women’s track team was ninth in the nation.

Since 1968 ...

CSUN has won 25 national team championships.

92 athletes have won individual titles.

The two numbers together--117--are most in the nation of any Division II school during that span.
