Cal State Northridge will have some added competition next year when Southern Utah State enters the 4-year-old Western Football Conference.

Southern Utah’s approval for membership in the WFC, which becomes effective July 1, 1986, was passed unanimously by a vote of the WFC Executive Committee last week.

SUSC is the seventh school to affiliate with the NCAA Division II. Other schools in the WFC are Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Santa Clara, California Lutheran College, Cal State Sacramento and Portland State.

“The addition of Southern Utah moves the Western Football Conference one step closer to our immediate goal of a 10-school league,” said Vic Buccola, conference commissioner. “This action . . . provides the WFC with the potential to become one of the nation’s leading NCAA Division II football conferences.”

In 1985-86, Southern Utah will maintain its dual membership in the NCAA Division II and will participate in the NAIA playoffs.
