About 200 Temple City residents returned to their homes after being evacuated when gasoline fumes were discovered in a sewer. Firefighters diluted the gasoline with fire-retardant foam. The gasoline had been flowing south toward a sewage treatment plant in Whittier Narrows Recreation Area about a quarter of a mile south of the Pomona Freeway and Rosemead Boulevard. Because of the high concentration of fumes in a four-block area along Temple City Boulevard, about 200 people were ordered evacuated between Valley Boulevard and Gidley Street. Sheriff’s Sgt. Ralph Martin said detectives believe that someone dumped gasoline in the drainage system.
