The sale of alcohol at Wednesday’s World Cup qualifying soccer game between England and Romania has been banned by a court.
Licensing magistrates, governing the area of North London that takes in the Wembley stadium, turned down a request for exemption from recent legislation that bans the sale of alcohol at English soccer grounds.
The legislation was brought in a month ago as part of a government crackdown on soccer hooliganism. But some clubs have found a loophole in the law that allows alcohol to be sold in bars out of sight of the playing area.
