Girl Gets Taste of Varsity Football in 40-0 Game
Pat Fedewa, believed to be the first female varsity football player at her high school and one of the few girls in the nation ever to compete in the sport, got her first taste of football action Friday.
With her team, Portland St. Patrick, trailing the Fowler Eagles, 40-0, with 3:16 remaining in the third quarter, Coach Bob Wolcott sent the 5-foot-4, 130-pound athlete into game as a receiver.
During the play, which was a pitchout to her side, Fedewa took the defensive back about 10 yards deep, then circled back in to help block. After the play she returned to the sidelines to cheer alongside her brother, Andy, an offensive lineman.
