Mary Star vs. Bishop Montgomery

This renewal of an old rivalry will be a stern test for Mary Star (1-1), which bounced back from an opening week shutout to whip Kern Valley, 26-7, last week. Quarterback Robbie Lorenzi was outstanding against Kern, passing for 189 yards and two touchdowns. Bishop Montgomery (2-0) has beaten North Torrance and shut out Long Beach Jordan, and its size on the lines should present problems for the Stars. The Knight offense has scored only two touchdowns--the defense has provided another--but the defense has allowed only seven points.

Hawthorne vs. Redondo

Redondo (2-0), winless last season, is off to its best start in years and faces another tough test after defeating ranked Miraleste last week. Hawthorne (2-0) presents more speed than Miraleste--possibly the most of any team in the South Bay--and will test a Sea Hawk defense that gave up 26 points to Miraleste. Redondo has shown a balanced attack behind running back Boots Cocoya and the passing combination of Scott Yessner to Mike Jones. Hawthorne is led by quarterback Alonzo Young and a defense featuring several college prospects up front.

North Torrance vs. West Torrance

A low-scoring contest of field position would appear to be on tap for these neighborhood rivals. North (0-2) has allowed only 19 points but with fullback Hector Murillo injured has managed only 14. West (1-1) lost a low-scoring game to powerful Verbum Dei but blasted Inglewood last week, 44-7. North will have a decided size advantage on the lines. Tailback Kevin Maher had 200 yards rushing and two touchdowns for West.

Carson vs. St. Paul

St. Paul is off to a 2-0 start and No. 10 CIF ranking by The Times, while Carson managed to overhaul Lynwood in its opener to maintain its No. 1 standing in the City. Carson found itself down, 14-0, in the first quarter of its opener but fought back behind quarterback Marc Walters, who pulled off big plays late in the game despite an ankle injury. He should be improved this week. Fabio Caceres’ field goal won the game, 16-14. St. Paul has a new coach, Rich Ready, and is relatively small but has started surprisingly fast behind quarterback John Scott. St. Paul may not have the speed to stay up with Carson running backs Alvin Goree and Calvin Holmes.

San Fernando vs. San Pedro

The Pirates (0-1) will have to muster more offense then they did in a 13-3 loss to Granada Hills and will have to find a way to slow San Fernando’s ground game. The Pirates surrendered 157 rushing yards to Granada’s Khalid Ali and will be facing several college-quality backs, including David Richards. San Pedro’s passing attack of Randy Galosic to Michael Ford was effective last week, accounting for more than 150 yards, but the Pirates also need to show a running game.
