Santa Clara was leading, 3-0, in the first quarter and seemed to have control of the game. The Saints were inside Rio Mesa’s 10-yard line and had a first-and-goal situation, but had to settle for a field goal. Rio Mesa’s Aaron Nordquist then returned the ensuing kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown. Rio Mesa quarterback Steve Carolan threw two second-half touchdowns to Darren Romano. Rio Mesa had scoring drives of 75 and 60 yards in the fourth quarter.
KEY PLAYERS
Leonard Lee (RM) carried the ball 14 times for 103 yards and quarterback Steve Carolan was 6 of 11 for 64 yards, including two touchdowns. He was not intercepted. . . . Darren Romero caught four passes for 43 yards including two for touchdowns. . . . Santa Clara had outscored opponents, 68-0, in its first two games.
