FALL SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS : Westlake Girls Lose to Royal in Volleyball

Westlake High’s volleyball team, which has had an easy time so far this season, finally found a tough team to play. The Warriors lost their first Marmonte League matchof the season Thursday, 8-15, 15-11, 17-15, 6-15 and 14-16, to unbeaten Royal.

Sandy Kranz led Westlake with 22 kills on 35 attempts, while teammates Alissa Evans and April Devine also turned in fine performances.

With the win, Royal took sole posession of first place, with a 5-0 record. Westlake dropped to second place with a 4-1 record.

The Warriors will have another shot at Royal at Westlake on Oct. 29.

Calabasas High faltered, then rallied to win the last three games to beat Santa Paula on Thursday in its first Frontier League volleyball match of the season.

Tracey Gonzales led the Coyotes with 12 kills on 25 attempts in the 14-16, 8-15, 15-4, 15-8 and 15-8 victory. Calabasas is 3-1 overall, while Santa Paula fell to 0-2 in league.

Chaminade High defeated Notre Dame in three straight volleyball games Thursday, 15-1, 15-3, 15-2, to record its sixth San Fernando Valley League victory.

Kathy Ahl led the Eagles with seven kills on 11 attempts. Chaminade is 6-0 in league.

Chaminade High’s girls tennis team easily defeated Corvallis Thursday, winning all six matches. Chaminade is 6-1 and will meet Louisville on Tuesday.

Simi Valley’s cross-country team topped Westlake, 16-39, and Channel Islands, 15-47, in a tri-meet.

Jim Zimmer was first for the Warriors at 15:37. Teammates Travis Briggs (16:13) and Adrian Ruiz (16:14) were second and third.

At 16:16, Steve Kellogg placed fifth and was the top runner for Simi Valley, while Jarrod Weaton was top runner at 11th for Channel Islands at 17:13.

Loyola cross-country runner Hugh McCracken set a course record at Griffith Park to lead the Cubs to a 16-46 win over Alemany. McCracken’s time was 13:53.

The top runner for Alemany was Peter Delacerda, who placed fifth at 15:15.

In the girls meet, Alemany defeated Notre Dame, 22-34. Soibhain O’Reily finished first for the Indians at 20:57. Lisa Howard of Notre Dame finished second at 21:44. Teammate Vicki Hosek finished third at 22:12.

Hart scored the top three runners to defeat Burbank in cross-country, 15-45.

Glenn Johnson was first across the finish line with a time of 17:26. Teammates Frank Flores and Kendall Moss were second and third, with times of 17:37 and 17:59.

Troy Swezey was Burbank’s top runner, placing seventh at 18:39.

Hart is 2-0. Burbank is 0-2.

Burbank, with only two runners, had to forfeit the girls meet. Hart’s Lisa Rizzo won with a time of 20:07, and Andrea Rakov (22:33) was second for Hart. Burbank’s Jennie Merrithew was third543257632
