PREP FOOTBALL : El Dorado Pulls Away From Katella in Last Half

El Dorado High School’s football team scored 20 points in the second half to pull away from Katella for a 27-0 victory Thursday night in Bradford Stadium.

The Golden Hawks (2-0 in league, 4-1 overall), led 7-0 at halftime.

Katella (0-2, 1-4) was shut out for the second straight time. Last week Pacifica defeated Katella, 35-0.

An El Dorado-homecoming crowd of 1,800 saw senior running back Doug Sipple score three times, twice on passes and once on a run. Sipple and teammate Doug Ash did most of the running because starting tailback Rich Chamberlain suffered a knee injury early in the second quarter and did not return. Ash carried 20 times for 92 yards. Sipple had 24 yards on three carries.

The Golden Hawks controlled the game on the ground in the second half. Sipple scored on a 12-yard run to cap a 10-play, 62-yard drive that used the last 5:34 of the third period.

Sipple opened the scoring in the first quarter when he caught a pass from Dan Sutherland near the 20-yard line and broke a series of tackles on his way to the end zone.

The Knights looked as if they would come back, but their drive stalled on the Golden Hawk 6. Katella had the ball for more than eight minutes and moved 75 yards on 20 plays, but then quarterback Greg Portis was forced out of bounds on a fourth-and-goal play.

Portis and Jeff Yourstone alternated between receiver and quarterback most of the game, but it did not help Katella. After the long drive failed, the Knights played offense between the 40-yard lines.

After El Dorado got its third touchdown on an eight-yard pass from Sutherland to Sipple, many of the starters were replaced. Reserve running back Dan O’Neil scored the final touchdown of the game on a 10-yard run with 1:16 left to play.
