San Diego Prep Review : Serra Does Unthinkable in Field Hockey : No, the Conquistadors Didn’t Lose, but Their Defense Did Allow a Goal

When the Serra High School field hockey team defeated San Marcos, 5-0, Saturday to win the Uptown Optometrist Tournament at Serra High, the tournament title was not big news.

Serra has the county’s longest championship streak with six consecutive San Diego Section titles.

What was news was Serra’s, 2-1, win Saturday over Oceanside in the quarterfinals. Oceanside’s goal is the only one Serra has allowed all season and it equals last season’s entire total.

Last season, Serra scored 125 goals and the one allowed is a Section record. The 1985 team can only tie the mark.

Cross-Country: Monte Vista’s Rob Lopes ran away from a field made up of some of Southern California’s finest high school distance runners to win the individual title in the Varsity Sweepstakes Division of the Mount Carmel-Second Sole Cross-Country Invitational Saturday at Mount Carmel High.

Lopes covered the 5,000-meter course in 15:31 to win by 25 seconds. Mark Davis of San Diego High won the Boys’ Varsity Small School Division in 15:56 and Clark Sandknop of San Dieguito won the Large School Division in 16:09.

Torrey Pines’ Nicole Nugent won the Girls’ Sweepstakes Division over two miles in 14:00. Escondido’s Megan Riker finished second in 14:08. Lopes and Nugent were named the Runners of the Meet.

Volleyball: Poway beat Parker, 15-13, 15-10 to win the unlimited division and Mission Bay defeated Mar Vista, 7-15, 15-13, 15-13, to win the limited division of the Serra-Kiwanis volleyball tournament at Serra High.

Mount Carmel’s Marcia Gale was named the most valuable player of the two-week tournament. Sherry Korger and Sherri Boyer represented Poway on the all-tournament team.

Football Notes: Lincoln and Bonita Vista had the Nos. 1 and 2 offenses in the county respectively entering play Friday. Each were shutdown, however. The teams, which had scored a combined 302 points in seven games, combined for 20 Friday. Much to the credit of their underrated defenses, each won. Lincoln beat Morse, 6-0, and Bonita Vista defeated Southwest, 14-3.

Sweetwater, which beat Fullerton, 42-21, Friday, passed Lincoln and Bonita Vista and has the county’s top offense, averaging 36.4 points per game. Sweetwater’s win was its 30th consecutive and broke Fullerton’s 11-game win streak. Fullerton is the defending CIF Southern Section Central Conference champion.

Montgomery’s Darryl Crawford took over the county rushing lead from Sweetwater’s Terry Rodgers. Crawford rushed for 237 yards and four touchdowns in Montgomery’s, 34-6, win against CETYS Friday. Despite losing the lead, Rodgers had an All-County performance as well. He rushed for 120 yards and four touchdowns on 11 carries. He caught a 33-yard pass for a fifth touchdown and threw a 22-yard pass for a sixth. Crawford leads Rodgers 811 yards to 699. Each has played five games.
