Helix Continues to Prove Why It’s No. 1 in 47-0 Win

Helix has been the county’s top-ranked football team all season long, and Friday night proved that their No. 1 spot is well-deserved. Kerry Barr ran for four touchdowns and Jeff Hammerschmidt passed for two others as Helix (6-0) routed Santana, 47-0, on the winner’s field.

The game was the Grossmont League 3-A opener for both teams.

The two teams battled through a scoreless first quarter before Helix broke the game wide open with 20 points in the second. Barr, who gained 122 yards on 19 carries, opened the scoring on a 5-yard run. He also scored on a 9-yard run later in the quarter. The Highlanders added a third touchdown before halftime when Hammerschmidt hit Terry Mack with a 6-yard scoring pass.

Barr continued the onslaught with a 3-yard run to open the scoring in the third quarter. Hammerschmidt, who completed 11 of 21 passes for 250 yards, hit Jeff Exum with a 39-yard completion for the next score.

Barr then came back to score his fourth touchdown in the third quarter. A two-yard run by Sean McClure in the fourth quarter closed out the scoring.

Santana fell to 1-5 for the season.

CITY CENTRAL LEAGUE

Crawford 35, St. Augustine 0--Running back Kevin Williams ran for 131 yards on 12 carries and scored three touchdowns and Paul Franklin scored on a 62-yard end-around to lead Crawford (3-1-1) to an easy win. The Colts gained 332 yards and held the Saints (1-5) to just 147 yards. The Saints were able to cross the Crawford 50-yard line only three times.

Lincoln 20, Hoover 7--Quarterback Malcolm Glover and wide receiver Patrick Rowe combined for two touchdowns as the No. 4 Hornets (3-2) won the league opener for both teams. In a game played at Lincoln, Glover hit Rowe for a 10-yard touchdown in the second quarter and a 15-yard score in the third. Patrick Newman of Lincoln returned the second-half kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown. Hoover fell to 3-2-1.

CITY EASTERN LEAGUE

Mira Mesa 28, Point Loma 16--DeWayne Odom had two touchdown passes and John Dykeman scored on a 46-yard interception return for the Marauders (4-2, 1-0) in the league opener for both teams at Mira Mesa. Dykeman’s score came with Point Loma (3-2-1, 0-1) leading, 10-0, in the second quarter.

Odom followed Dykeman’s touchdown run with a 10-yard scoring pass to Ray Rowe that put the Marauders ahead, 14-10, at halftime. He and Rowe connected for a six-yard score in the third period. John Stanley led the Pointers with 72 yards on 18 rushes and one touchdown. He also threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Ken Dunaway in the second period.

CITY WESTERN LEAGUE

University City 27, Kearny 14-It was Kearny’s homecoming, but it was Univerity City’s Paul Macrenato who stole the show. The junior tailback scored three touchdowns and rushed for 154 yards on 28 carries to lead University City to a win in the league opener for both teams.

Macrenato scored on runs of 6, 10 and 51 yards as the winners improved their season record to 3-2. The game was tied 14-14 at halftime, but Macrenato put his team ahead to stay on his 10-yard scoring run with 4:21 remaining in the third quarter. He scored the game’s final touchdown on the 51-yard run. Kenny King accounted for University City’s other score on a 76-yard punt return.

Clairemont 28, La Jolla 7--Halfback Circe Moore ran for one touchdown and threw for another for the Chieftains (3-3) in the league opener for both teams at Clairemont. Moore hit Jamel Miller on a halfback pass for a 53-yard score in the third quarter and ran for a 7-yard score in the final period. Clairemont also scored on a 35-yard touchdown pass from Brian Gipson and on a fumble recovery in the end zone by Eddie Taylor. La Jolla dropped to 0-4-1.

NONLEAGUE Bonita Vista 26, Castle Park 7--Quarterback Doug Piper threw four touchdowns for the No. 8 Barons, who improved their record to 5-1. Piper hit Kip Korzep for an 8-yard score in the first quarter and Scott Sachrison for an 11-yard touchdown in the second. In the final quarter, Piper and Vince Montano connected for scores of 26 and 21 yards. Mike Martinez scored for Castle Park (1-5) in the third quarter. Piper finished the game 8 of 17 for 127 yards, and Montano caught 5 passes for 85 yards.

AVOCADO LEAGUE San Marcos 6, Oceanside 2--The Knights (2-1, 2-4) scored the game’s only touchdown in the third quarter and gave up an intentional safety in the late-going to beat the Pirates (0-3, 1-5) at San Marcos. Jim Terral scored for San Marcos on a 16-yard run. With 1:20 to play and the ball deep in San Marcos territory, Knight punter Rick Ebert ran out of the end zone for a safety that gave Oceanside its points.

METRO--SOUTH BAY LEAGUE Southwest 42, Marian 0--Ron Hurdle ran the opening kickoff back 99 yards for a touchdown as Southwest (1-0, 3-1-2) rolled to an easy win. Sergio Moreno scored on runs of 26 and 35 yards, gaining 103 yards on 12 carries. Other Southwest scores came on a 34-yard run on a fake punt by Herbie Nelson, a 60-yard pass from Alex Sanchez to Johnny Walker and a 27-yard pass from Casey Quinn to Christian Engle.

The Southwest defense limited Marian (0-1, 1-5) to three first downs and 60 yards total offense.

METRO MESA LEAGUE Sweetwater 20, Montgomery 0--Sweetwater extended the county’s longest winning streak to 31 games with a convincing 20-0 win in the league opener for both teams.

Terry Rodgers led the attack with 108 yards on 20 carries, including a 1-yard touchdown run. Mike Portillo opened the scoring for the winners on a 29-yard pass from Richard Sanchez in the first quarter. Mike Molina capped the scoring on a 41-yard pass interception return.

Montgomery’s Darryl Crawford rushed for 130 yards on 29 carries. Sweetwater improved its overall record to 6-0, while Montgomery slipped to 4-2.
