HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL TODAY : Kennedy vs. Granada Hills

Share

Granada Hills High School 8 p.m.

Granada Hills leads the series, 6-5, with victories over the Golden Cougars the past two seasons. Last year, Kennedy’s Greg Friedman missed field goals of 29 and 38 yards in the last 38 seconds as Granada Hills hung on for a wild 28-27 win. This season, the Highlanders are off to a 5-0 start, including a 27-0 win over El Camino Real in the Valley 4-A League opener last week. Kennedy is 2-3 after consecutive losses to Banning and San Fernando.

Reseda vs. Venice

At Venice 8 p.m.

Venice (4-1, 3-0) defeated Westchester, 10-8, two weeks ago. A win over Reseda (3-2, 2-1) would leave only University (2-3, 2-1) North Hollywood (1-4, 1-2) and Grant (1-4, 1-2) on the Gondoliers’ schedule. Reseda, which has one of the most improved defenses in the Valley, lost to Westchester, 16-7, last week because of a lackluster offensive performance in the second half. Regent quarterback Daryl Mickens, who has completed 41 of 74 passes for 649 yards and 7 touchdowns, is always a threat if his line provides protection.

Birmingham vs. Monroe

At Monroe 8 p.m.

Monroe (3-1-1) seems to be sputtering in its bid for a second consecutive Sunset League championship. In a 28-0 loss to Canoga Park last week, the Vikings were held to only 133 yards and made six turnovers--three fumbles and three interceptions. Birmingham coasted early in the season, winning its three nonleague games. The Braves lost their season opener to Reseda, but have won four in a row since, including a 21-13 victory over Van Nuys last week.

Saugus vs. Canyon

College of the Canyons 7:30 p.m.

Canyon (6-0) brings a 30-game winning streak into this Golden League game against winless Saugus (0-4-2). The Cowboys boast the second-best offense and third-rated defense among Valley-area Southern Section schools. They average 300 yards a game on offense, allow 145 yards a game on defense, and have outscored the opposition, 132-26. Saugus counters with a strong defense that has allowed 175 yards a game and only 58 points this season. The Centurions problems are on offense. They have scored only 25 points in six games.

Canoga Park vs. Taft

At Taft High 8 p.m.

This game matches two of the top teams in the Sunset League. Canoga Park is coming off a 28-0 win over league-rival Monroe. The Hunters upped their record to 4-1 and are 1-0 in league. Tony Cantrell ranks fifth among City Section Valley quarterbacks. He has passed for 519 yards and seven touchdowns. Last week, running back Kenny Durr rushed for 95 yards on eight carries and scored two touchdowns. Taft, meanwhile, was upset by Chatsworth, 17-12. The Toreadors (3-2, 0-1) are led by quarterback Ray Daniels, who last week completed 11 of 28 passes for 184 yards.

Bellarmine-Jefferson vs. Chaminade

At Pierce College 7:30 p.m.

Bellarmine-Jefferson is coming off a 28-17 loss to St. Genevieve. The Guards fell to 2-3-1, 0-1 in the Sante Fe League. Offensively, Bell-Jeff will depend on the passing of quarterback Keith Fitzgerald. League rival Chaminade (4-1-1, 1-0) shut out Daniel Murphy last week, 14-0. Running back Jang Kim gained 146 yards on 17 carries, while Tim Lavin rushed for 97 yards on 16 carries. Kim and Lavin gained 140 and 101 yards, respectively, the previous week. Defensively, the Eagles held Murphy to -11 yards rushing and intercepted two passes.
