USD to Meet Cal Poly Pomona in Effort to Hurdle the .500 Mark

When the University of San Diego plays host to Cal Poly Pomona at 1:30 this afternoon, USD (3-3) will be trying to accomplish something it hasn’t done in three years: surpass the .500 mark.

The Toreros, winners of three of their last four games, registered a 21-17 win over La Verne last week. Roger Cloutier’s scoring run with 36 seconds left was the difference for USD .

Cal Poly Pomona (4-2) has beaten the Toreros in five of six meetings, but the Broncos are now a club team, which could make them an easier opponent to handle.

“Technically, it should be that way,” USD Coach Brian Fogarty said. “But we know very little about these guys. We do know that they have good size--as big as any team we’ve played this year.

“I hope our guys don’t think they’re no good just because they’re a club team. We’re not that good of a team. We can’t overlook anybody.”

The Toreros, who have been plagued by injuries all year, are finally returning to health. Defensive tackle Brian Laliberte missed last week’s game with a sore knee but might play this afternoon. Another defensive tackle, Kevin Rice, who bruised his back against La Verne and didn’t practice all week, is listed as doubtful. Safety Tim White, out three weeks with a knee injury, may see some action today.
