Lancers Hope to Catch Rams Looking Ahead

The Millikan High School football team has outscored its first three Moore League opponents, 119-30, but visiting Lakewood High (2-1) hopes to catch the 3-0 Rams looking ahead when the teams meet Friday night at Millikan. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

If Millikan wins, it would set up a showdown for the league title with top-ranked Poly next week. Poly (3-0) is expected to have little trouble at Jordan (1-2) on Friday.

Lakewood is seeking its first playoff berth in two years. The Lancers need only one win in their last two games to make the playoffs. Lakewood closes at home with winless Wilson.

“We hope we catch them looking ahead to Poly,” said Lakewood Coach Gene Melvin of the Rams.

“They are so good in so many ways,” he said of Millikan. “They have an inside game and an outside game and they’re throwing the ball now. That wasn’t their forte in the past. You can’t run an eight-man line at them now and hope to win.”

The Ram offense centers around wide receiver Ed Robinson (41 catches, 881 yards, 7 TDs) and elusive quarterback Cliff Mosley (65-120, 1,267 yards, 11 TD). Robinson, who also starts on defense, has intercepted seven passes.
