San Diego Prep Football : University City Beats La Jolla for League Title

University City High School took an early lead on a field goal, then scored again in the fourth quarter to beat La Jolla, 10-6, Friday night to win the City Western League championship.

The Centurions (4-0, 6-2), in only their fourth year of varsity football, got a 31-yard field goal from Steve Beck in the first quarter, held at Mira Mesa.

Fullback Darrin Wagner ran 19 yards for a touchdown that gave UC a 10-0 lead with 7:24 remaining. Darrel King of La Jolla (2-2, 2-5-1) scored from one yard out with 42 seconds left.

Tailback Paul MacRenato led the Centurions with 125 yards on 18 carries. Rex Edwards, La Jolla’s quarterback, threw for 80 yards and rushed for 40 more.

CITY EASTERN LEAGUE Mira Mesa 28, Patrick Henry 14--Essex Burton ran for 137 yards on 13 carries and scored on a 53-yard touchdown as Mira Mesa (3-1, 6-3) clinched the league’s No. 2 playoff berth.

Quarterback DeWayne Odom completed 8 of 16 passes for 214 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another. John Dykeman opened the scoring with an 11-yard run in the first quarter to give Mira Mesa a 7-0 lead. The Marauders made it 14-0 in the second quarter when Odom scored on a one-yard run.

Patrick Henry (1-2-1, 3-5-1) cut the margin to 14-6 in the third quarter when Keith Courtney threw an eight-yard pass to Jeff Pheilacker. Courtney completed 21 of 32 passes for 301 yards and two touchdowns. Mira Mesa increased its lead to 28-6 before a 20-yard scoring pass from Courtney to Ron Young. Young caught eight passes for 128 yards.

Morse 14, Madison 3--Madison (0-3-1, 3-4-1) scored first, on a 35-yard field goal by Todd Scott, but No. 10 Morse (4-0, 6-3) rallied to beat the Warhawks and clinch a tie for the Eastern championship. Playing at Madison, Morse took a 7-3 lead on a 12-yard scoring run by George Jackson in the second quarter. Steve Palmer of the Tigers scored from two yards out on the game’s final play.

Point Loma 35, Serra 7--John Stanley scored four touchdowns and gained 231 yards in total offense, and Walt Edwards threw three touchdown passes to lead the Pointers (2-2, 5-3-1) to an easy win at Serra.

Stanley rushed for 119 yards on 18 carries and caught 7 passes for 112 yards. Edwards completed 12 of 17 passes for 207 yards. Point Loma’s defense limited Serra (1-3, 1-7) to 100 yards.

Serra took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter, marching 37 yards in two plays after recovering a Point Loma fumble. Delvon Logan scored on a 17-yard run. Point Loma tied the game later in the quarter when Stanley scored from one yard out. The Pointers took the lead in the second quarter on a 33-yard touchdown pass from Edwards to Stanley.

Point Loma increased its lead to 21-7 in the third quarter when Edwards hit Pat Brown with a 35-yard touchdown pass. Stanley finished the Pointers’ scoring on a six-yard pass from Edwards and a 43-yard run.

CITY CENTRAL LEAGUE Crawford 37, San Diego 0--Kevin Williams rushed 13 times for 122 yards as the No. 6 Colts clinched a tie for their third consecutive Central championship. Williams gained 111 yards in the first half, then carried the ball only twice in the second half. Troy Purdie added 69 yards on seven carries for Crawford, and quarterback Tommy Fejarang threw touchdown passes to Randy Johnson and Lou Coons.

Hoover 29, Christian 7--Galen Sweet ran for three touchdowns as Hoover (3-1, 6-2-1) kept its playoff hopes alive with a win at home. Sweet scored on runs of one, five and two yards, and added a two-point conversion.

Hoover took a 7-0 first-quarter lead on Sweet’s one-yard score, but Christian came back to tie it on a three-yard pass from John Okken to Brian Weeks.

Hoover took the lead in the second quarter on Sweet’s second touchdown. Sweet converted the two-point conversion to make it 15-7 at halftime. The Cardinals added two fourth-quarter touchdowns to put the game out of reach.

Christian (2-2, 7-2) was its own worst enemy. The Patriots drove to the Hoover 5, 15 and 20-yard lines in the third quarter, but were denied each time by pass interceptions. Hoover had a total of four interceptions. Christian’s Steve Essick rushed for 100 yards on 15 carries.

CITY WESTERN LEAGUE Kearny 21, Mission Bay 6--Running back Alan Ring scored two touchdowns as the Komets (2-2, 5-4) beat the Buccaneers (0-4, 3-6) at Mesa College. Ring ran 52 yards for a score to put Kearny ahead, 7-0, in the first quarter. After Mission Bay pulled to within 7-6, Ring scored from five yards out in the second quarter. Scott Welish hit James Courtney with a 30-yard touchdown pass to give Kearny a 21-6 lead at halftime.

University 35, Clairemont 21--Eric Coleman ran for four touchdowns, but it was the running of James Wilson and Martin Correia that led University (2-2, 4-5) to victory.

Wilson gained 163 yards on 22 carries, and Corriea gained 104 yards on 14 carries as University’s running attack accounted for 329 yards. Coleman, who got the ball when Unversity got close to the goal line, gained 31 yards on six tries.

Quarterback Greg Gibbons scored three touchdowns for Clairemont (2-2, 4-5).

The game was tied 21-21 in the fourth quarter before University put the game out of reach with two unanswered touchdowns.

METRO MESA LEAGUE Bonita Vista 34, Hilltop 12--Jim Warner returned the opening kickoff 90 yards for one touchdown and ran 50 yards from scrimmage for a second touchdown on Bonita Vista’s first play from scrimmage to lead the Barons (1-2, 6-3) to the win at home.

Bonita Vista scored 27 unanswered points in the first quarter. Quarterback Doug Piper, who completed five of seven passes for 133 yards, threw two first-quarter touchdown passes to Don Gill of 15 and 46 yards. Piper threw a third touchdown pass, in the third quarter, to Vince Montano of 53 yards to give the Barons a 34-0 lead. Hilltop dropped to 0-3, 3-4-1.

PALOMAR LEAGUE Vista 55, San Dieguito 13--Vista (5-0, 8-0) clinched at least a tie for the league championship behind an outstanding performance by Roger Price. The senior tailback ran for 271 yards on eight carries and scored four touchdowns on runs of 36, 41, 95 and 71 yards.

Vista running back Tommy Booker added 118 yards on seven carries and scored two touchdowns. His touchdowns came on a 16-yard run and an 85-yard kickoff return. Quarterback Sal Aunese ran for one touchdown and passed for another as Vista ran up a 42-0 lead before San Dieguito (0-6, 1-6-1) scored. Overall, Vista ran up 514 yards in total offense, including 440 on the ground.

Orange Glen 31, Poway 28--Kelly Brown kicked a 25-yard field goal with eight seconds to play to give ninth-ranked Orange Glen (3-2,7-2) the win in a game played Friday night at Poway. The Patriots marched 70 yards to the Poway two-yard line. With no timeouts remaining, Brown kicked the game-winning field goal. Brett Salisbury completed 25 of 41 passes for 228 yards and two touchdowns for Orange Glen.

NONLEAGUE Helix 27, Castle Park 0--Running back Kerry Barr gained 94 yards on 16 carries and scored three times for the No. 4 Highlanders (2-1, 8-1). Eric Arcio, also a running back, scored the other touchdown while rushing 11 times for 74 yards. Castle Park fell to 3-6 while remaining 2-0 in the Metro-South Bay standings.

Southwest 9, Montgomery 7--Sophomore Paul Taveres kicked three field goals, the third with eight seconds left, to give Southwest (1-1, 4-3-2) the win at home. Taveres kicked a 22-yard field goal to win the game, a 37-yard field goal in the second quarter and a 26-yard field goal in the third quarter.

Montgomery took a 7-6 lead on a 47-yard touchdown run by Daryl Crawford, the county’s leading rusher. Crawford finished the game with 104 yards on 16 carries. Montgomery (1-2, 5-4) appeared to have the game in control, but turned the ball over to Southwest at its own 44-yard line with 2:20 to play. Sparked by a 17-yard draw play by Ron Hurdle, Southwest drove to the Montgomery 12-yard line to set up the game winning field goal.
