Williams’ Pass to Daggett Propels Fullerton to Win

Quarterback Victor Williams hit wide receiver Curt Daggett with a 56-yard second-quarter touchdown pass to propel Fullerton High School to a 9-7 Freeway League victory over Sunny Hills at Fullerton District Stadium in front of 1,500.

Williams led the Indians offense, completing 7 of 17 passes for 113 yards. He was intercepted twice.

Junior fullback Mike Chacon paced the Indians’ ground attack by rushing for 75 yards in 21 carries. Fullerton’s Darrell Corbin added 68 yards in 15 attempts before suffering a broken leg in the fourth quarter.

Sunny Hills running back David Wackerman was held in check by the Fullerton defense, gaining only 32 yards in 12 carries.

The Lancers (2-2, 4-5) were led by Tim Imperiali. The junior flanker scored the only Sunny Hills touchdown on a 56-yard reverse in the first quarter.

Fullerton (2-2, 6-3) scored on its first possession when Mick Mineni kicked a 32-yard field goal. Sunny Hills answered with Imperiali’s touchdown run, but was shut out the rest of the game. The Lancers were held to 96 yards rushing.

Fullerton lineman Scotty Price led the defense with two quarterback sacks and a first half fumble recovery.

In other Freeway League action:

Sonora 23, Buena Park 12--Gary Stick caught a 26-yard touchdown pass and also made a two-point conversion reception to lead the Raiders (2-2, 3-6) past the Coyotes (0-4, 1-8) in front of 1,000 in Spaulding Stadium. Duane Bell led Sonora’s rushing attack by gaining 169 yards in 18 carries.

Quarterback Ron Lesperance completed 8 of 13 pass attempts for 93 yards and also rushed for a touchdown.

Stick scored Sonora’s first touchdown when he caught a 26-yard pass from Lesperance on the last play of the first quarter.

With 2:27 left in the first half, Art Valencia blocked a Buena Park punt and recovered it in the Coyote end zone for a touchdown. After a two-point conversion, the Raiders had a 14-0 halftime lead.

Buena Park scored two touchdowns in the third quarter to cut Sonora’s lead to 14-12. Robert Steno knocked the ball out of Lesperance’s hand, recovered the quarterback’s fumble and then raced 35 yards for a Coyote touchdown.

Steno blocked a punt to set up Buena Park’s other score. The block gave Buena Park the ball at the Sonora 22. Three plays later, Rodger Leitner scored on a one-yard run.

But the Raiders put the game away minutes later when Lesperance scored on a one-yard run.
