Southern Section Water Polo : Corona del Mar Beats Santa Ana Valley

No. 3 Corona del Mar High School team defeated Santa Ana Valley Tuesday, 13-6, to eliminate the Falcons in a quarterfinal match of the CIF Southern Section 4-A water polo playoffs at Newport Harbor High.

The Sea Kings (20-6), champions of the Seaview League, took a 6-0 advantage at the half. Corona del Mar was led by Jason Likins, who scored seven goals, and Bill Harmon, who added two.

The Century League champion Falcons (24-2) got two late goals by Jeff Wines.

In other 4-A playoff action:

Sunny Hills 12, Villa Park 8--The top-seeded Lancers, the Freeway League champions, earned their 28th victory of the season at Belmont Plaza to advance to the semifinals against rival Newport Harbor. Sunny Hills was led by Erik Blum, who had four goals, and Bill Slope, who added three. Lancer Goalie Mike Bay had 11 saves. For the Spartans, the Century League’s second-place team, K.C. Nowak, Lance Larson and Craig Ackey each scored twice.

Newport Harbor 10, Marina 6--Rob Stewart scored two goals in the first half as the Sailors opened a 5-2 lead in Newport Beach and went on to gain their 18th win of the season.

Matt McLaren scored three goals and Rob Mihalko and Bob Gifford added two each for the Sailors and goalie Jeff Woodruff had six saves. Marina was paced by Swyane Wellhoeffer and Scott Larson with two goals each.

In 3-A action:

El Toro 13, Mira Costa 5--The top-seeded Chargers (22-7) took a 9-2 halftime lead against the Mustangs (12-11) and went on to win at El Toro. John Dennis scored three goals, tying the school single-season scoring record of 81 set by Brian Berneking in 1984. Teammate Rob Spooner led all scorers with six goals, a career-high. Goalie Rob Blenkinsop had recorded eight saves when he left the game two minutes into the third quarter.

The Chargers face fourth-seeded Hacienda Heights Wilson in a semifinal match at Citrus College Friday at 3:15 p.m.

San Clemente 11, Santa Monica 7--The third-seeded Tritons (19-6) advanced to the semifinals as Troy Simington and Greg Farrier scored three goals each at Santa Monica. San Clemente goalie Greg Cohen also contributed 17 saves, a career-high.

The Tritons, the South Coast League’s No. 2 team, will face Empire League champion El Dorado Friday at a site to be determined by a coin flip today. Earlier this season, the Golden Hawks defeated the Tritons, 7-6, in sudden death.

El Dorado 12, Loyola 6--Mike Fairchild and Greg Clark each scored three goals to pace the Hawks, who advanced to Friday’s semifinals with a victory over the Cubs at Loyola. Fairchild’s goal with one second left in the first half gave the Empire League champions a 5-3 lead, which they had increased to 8-4 by the end of three periods.

Two minutes into the match, the Hawks lost starter Steve Mackar when a thrown ball split the skin between two of his fingers. The Cubs ended their season with a 20-5 record. El Dorado, which lost in the final to Hacienda Heights Wilson last season, is 24-5.
