San Diego Section Tennis Playoffs : La Jolla Girls Sweep Holtville in First Round

Top-seeded La Jolla High School, which won the combined section championship last year, swept visiting Holtville, 7-0, Thursday in the opening round of the San Diego Section 2-A girls’ tennis playoffs.

The Vikings (13-0), who won the City Western League this fall, took all 14 sets and dropped just 29 games to Holtville (8-3).

La Jolla’s Tina Kahan and Kim Rostofsky, seeded first in the upcoming Section doubles tournament, beat Lucy Desilgus and Bertha Leimberger, 6-0, 6-1. Julie Coakley, fourth seed in the Section singles competition, led La Jolla’s singles corps with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Jackie Garcia.

The 2-A semifinals take place this afternoon. Action in the 3-A Division also starts today with Palomar League co-champion Torrey Pines the top seed.

In other 2-A action Thursday:

Bishop’s 7, Our Lady of Peace 0--The second-seeded Knights won all 14 sets, losing only 16 games, against City Central League runner-up OLP (8-7) at Bishop’s.

Bishop’s (13-6), which finished second in the City West, was led by Michelle Button’s 6-0, 6-0 win in singles. Jennifer Numbers and Heather Bowden won their doubles contest, 6-1, 6-3.

San Pasqual 5, Mission Bay 2--Nicole Main of fourth-seeded San Pasqual edged Mission Bay’s Christy Drage, 7-5, 6-4, to lead the Eagles to victory on their home courts. Main is seeded sixth and Drage is seeded fourth in the Section singles tournament.

San Pasqual (14-5), runner-up in the Avocado League, was also bolstered by Kim Krug and Joey Dooley, who beat Wendy Talley and Heather Stearns, 6-2, 6-4. Mission Bay (13-7) finished third in the City West.

Carlsbad 7, Christian 0--The third-seeded Lancers (19-2), who won the Avocado League, took 14 of 15 sets in beating City Central champion Christian (8-5) at Carlsbad.

Wendy McNabb, Carlsbad’s No. 1 singles player, beat Christian’s top player, Dana Devol, 6-1, 6-0. The Lancers’ second singles player, Becky Smith, rallied to top Leslie Thurmond, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1.
