HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL TODAY : Agoura vs. Nordhoff

Share

At Nordhoff High 7:30 p.m.

Agoura’s chances of a Frontier League championship practically disappeared last week with a 27-21 loss to Santa Clara. But the Chargers (6-3, 3-1) still have a shot at the playoffs. To reach the post-season, Agoura will have to get by Nordhoff, a team that started slowly but has come on strong. The winner of tonight’s game will go to the playoffs as a second-place team. Santa Clara has already wrapped up at least a share of the league title. Nordhoff is 2-2 in league and 3-6 overall.

Crespi vs. Notre Dame

At Notre Dame High 7:30 p.m.

These teams close out the regular season by renewing their cross-town rivalry. Crespi leads the series, 8-4, but Notre Dame has won the last two years by lopsided margins. Crespi (5-4, 1-3 in the Del Rey League) broke a 13-game league losing streak last week against St. Francis. Crespi will need a strong performance from backfield mates Jon Budge (406 yards) and Jeff Kellogg (365 yards). A Notre Dame win would almost assure the Knights of a postseason bid. Notre Dame (3-6, 2-2) has been led by running backs Jerry Pondella (408 yards) and Nate Milone (355 yards). The Knights will have to do it without Pondella, however. He broke a hand in last week’s loss to Loyola and will not play.

Monroe vs. Chatsworth

At Chatsworth High 8 p.m.

Monroe quarterback Robert Harding has returned to the Vikings’ lineup and, as Chatsworth Coach Myron Gibford said, “It’s a whole different ballgame.” Harding has missed most of the season with an injury. Barry Thomas, a receiver and defensive back, took Harding’s place and did well. But he is even better as a receiver. Chatsworth (6-2, 4-0) already is playoff-bound. The Chancellors lead the Sunset League after last week’s 9-0 upset of Canoga Park. Monroe is 5-2-1 overall, 2-2 in league.

Granada Hills vs. San Fernando

At San Fernando High 8 p.m.

Two of the hottest teams in the Valley meet to decide the Valley 4-A League championship. San Fernando (6-2) has won five of its last six games, including four in a row. During their winning streak, the Tigers have outscored their opponents, 145-14. Granada Hills (7-0) is 3-0 in league, the same as San Fernando. The Highlanders are ranked second in the Valley by The Times, one spot ahead of the Tigers. “This is one of the finest San Fernando teams I’ve seen in a long time,” Granada Hills Coach Darryl Stroh said.

Simi Valley vs. Westlake

At Thousand Oaks High 7:30 p.m.

The battle of Simi Valley (7-2) against Westlake (6-3) matches up two of the best running backs in the Valley. Simi’s M.J. Nelson has 876 yards and six scores on 146 carries, while Westlake’s Gary Wellman has 842 yards on 103 carries. Wellman has 16 touchdowns rushing and seven receiving. If Simi Valley (7-2) wins, it will clinch its first playoff berth since 1978. A win would also give the Pioneers (4-1 in league) at least a share of the Marmonte League title. Thousand Oaks (4-1) plays 0-5 Royal. If Westlake (6-3) wins, there is a chance for a three-way tie for second in league. Westlake is 3-2 in league, while Newbury Park (also 3-2) plays Camarillo (1-4).

Calabasas vs. Santa Clara

At Oxnard High 7:30 p.m.

If Calabasas wins, it has a good shot at making the playoffs. If the Coyotes lose, their season is over. The combination Calabasas (6-3, 2-2) needs to qualify for the playoffs as the third-place team from the Frontier League is as follows: a victory over first-place Santa Clara (8-1, 4-0) ,coupled with an Agoura (6-3, 3-1) win against Nordhoff (4-5, 2-2). If Calabasas and Nordhoff finish in a tie for third place, the Rangers would advance to the playoffs by virtue of their 21-19 victory over the Coyotes. In Santa Clara, Calabasas will be facing a team that clinched a share of the league title last week with a 27-21 victory over Agoura.

Antelope Valley vs. Canyon

At Canyon High 7:30 p.m.

Canyon, ranked No. 1 in The Times Valley Top Ten, will attempt to wrap up its fourth straight Golden League title. The Cowboys are 19-0 in league since Coach Harry Welch took over in 1982. They have also won 33 consecutive games. A Cowboy loss tonight, however, would give Antelope Valley (6-3, 3-1) the league championship. Canyon has outscored its opponents, 269-32, and has the top defense in the Valley. The Cowboys (9-0, 4-0) have given up just 140 yards a game. They also have the area’s No. 3 offense, gaining 305 yards a game. Quarterback John Watkins has passed for 1,034 yards and 11 touchdowns. Running back Lance Cross has rushed for 834 yards and 11 touchdowns. Antelope Valley has outscored its opponents, 173-77.

Hart vs. Schurr

At Montebello High 7:30 p.m.

Before the season, the Southern Section poll listed Hart (5-3-1, 4-0) as the top-ranked team in the Coastal Conference--the slot presently occupied by Schurr (9-0, 4-0). The victor will win the Foothill League championship. Hart has won five straight games and is led by junior quarterback Jim Bonds, who has passed for 1,558 yards and 11 touchdowns. “Remember the TV series, ‘Land of the Giants,’ ” Schurr Coach Ken Davis said. “That’s what I thought I was watching when I looked at films of Hart.” Schurr compensates for its lack of size with quickness, speed and the ability to come up with the big play. The Spartans are averaging 36.1 points and 400 yards a game.

Burbank vs. Burroughs

At Memorial Field 7:30 p.m.

It’s been a long season for the two cross-town rivals. Burbank (3-6, 1-3) still has an outside chance of making the playoffs, providing the Bulldogs beat Burroughs and Alhambra beats San Gabriel. Burbank would then have to win a coin flip to take third place in the Foothill League. A win for Burroughs (2-7, 0-4) would help salvage what has been a disappointing season for the Indians. “A win in this game would be a great motivator for our kids and will help us get through the off-season,” Burroughs Coach George Rosales said. Burbank has won the last two years, but Burroughs has a 20-15 lead in the series that began in 1949.
