San Diego Section Volleyball : La Jolla Beats University City

La Jolla High School allowed just eight points Thursday night as it swept Escondido, 15-6, 15-1, 15-1, in a San Diego Section 2-A volleyball semifinal at University City.

The top-seeded Vikings, led by the all-around play of outside hitter Susie Raulston, improved their record to 26-2. Escondido is 13-12.

“We just played outstanding,” La Jolla Coach Vicki Eveleth said. “I was very impressed with the girls. We kept Escondido on defense constantly. If we can keep it up for one more match, we can do it.”

The Vikings, who have won the last three 2-A titles, face second-seeded San Pasqual in the 2-A final Saturday at 5 p.m. at Grossmont College. The 3-A final, to follow the 2-A match at the same site, pits Poway and Granite Hills.

In other action night:

San Pasqual 3, University 2--Carrie Luttio had 15 kills and 10 blocks to lead the Golden Eagles (19-6) to a 15-9, 11-15, 10-15, 15-10, 15-5 win in the other 2-A semifinal at University City. San Pasqual was also led in the marathon match by the setting and serving of Kathy Vernetti. University finished the season at 19-9.

Poway 3, Bonita Vista 1--The top-seeded Titans (29-3), defending 3-A champions, took a 15-4, 12-15, 15-8, 15-4 decision over the Barons (18-8) in a 3-A semifinal match at La Jolla. Setter-outside hitter Dana Beardsley led Bonita Vista with nine kills.

Granite Hills 3, Mount Carmel 2--In a battle of unseeded teams, Granite Hills (22-6) rallied from a 12-2 deficit in the fifth game to win the game, 15-12, and the match over Mount Carmel (27-7).
