San Diego Section Tennis : Valhalla’s Crawford Leads Seeded Players Into Semifinals

The top seeds in singles and doubles both won twice Friday to advance to the semifinals of the San Diego Section girls’ individual tennis tournament.

Valhalla High School’s Katrina Crawford, seeking to become the second player in San Diego Section history to win back-to-back singles championships, beat Wanda Yocum of Monte Vista, 6-3, 6-3, and Kim Khoury of La Jolla, 6-2, 6-0.

La Jolla’s Tina Kahan and Kim Rostofsky, Section runners-up in doubles a year ago, beat teammates Johnna Serror and Suzie Mainster, 6-2, 6-1, and Julie Sisel and Grinna Roth of Fallbrook, 7-5, 4-6, 6-2.

Friday’s action was at La Jolla and Bishop’s. Monday’s semifinals and Tuesday’s finals will be at Bishop’s.

In her semifinal, Crawford will play meet fourth-seeded Julie Coakley of La Jolla. The other semifinal will be second-seeded Shannon Crockett of Bishop’s against No. 3 Christy Drage of Mission Bay.

In the doubles semifinals, Kahan and Rostofsky will face the third seeds, Jonelle Ayson and Charissa Cosky of Mount Carmel, and second-seeded Kalike Yandall and Stephanie Hake meet No. 5 Sybil Schlotman and Marilee Ogren of Poway.

Most of the top seeds had little trouble winning Friday. In singles, Crockett beat teammate Michele Button, 6-0, 6-0, and Roseann Alva of Carlsbad, 6-0, 6-0. Drage beat Carlsbad’s Wendi McNabb, 6-3, 6-2, and sixth-seeded Nicolle Main of San Pasqual, 6-1, 6-4.

Coakley beat Mount Carmel’s Yvonne Arinduque, 6-0, 6-2, before meeting the No. 5 seed, Poway’s Carla Quaresma for a three-set match that Coakley won, 7-6, 4-6, 6-3.

In doubles, Schlotman and Ogren pulled off a mild upset in beating fourth-seeded Jeffie Demsey and Erin Helm of Torrey Pines, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, in the quarterfinals.
