Dons, Rustlers to Meet in Water Polo Final

Top-ranked Rancho Santiago College set up a championship showdown with rival Golden West Friday by defeating Modesto, 11-7, in a first-round match of the state water polo championship tournament at Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo.

The Dons, Inland Conference champions, will play the Rustlers, co-champions of the South Coast Conference, for the title today at 1 p.m. Golden West defeated College of the Sequoias in a first-round match, 9-7.

Rancho Santiago (28-1) has defeated Golden West (19-6) twice in three meetings, including last week’s 12-8 win over the Rustlers in the final of the Southern California championship tournament.

Against Modesto (21-8-1), Rancho Santiago was led by Marc Young and John O’Neal, who each scored three goals. Jason Jeffries and Mark Wicks each scored three goals for Golden West in its win over College of the Sequoias.
