Share

The La Reina High girls tennis team lost its second straight Southern Section 1-A final, 10-8, Tuesday to Mayfield of Pasadena.

“We’re getting better,” La Reina Coach Leif Jonassen said. “We lost, 11-7, last year. Maybe next year we’ll get it right.”

La Reina finished the season 19-6. Mayfield improved to 18-1.

La Reina’s loss last year in the final was at the hands and racquets of Diamond Bar. This year, La Reina defeated Diamond Bar in the semifinals.

The key to Tuesday’s match at the West End Tennis & Racquet Club in Torrance was Mayfield’s No. 3 doubles team of Annette Fuller and Kerith Kelly.

Fuller and Kelly lost to La Reina’s No. 1 doubles team, but pulled off upsets of the Regents’ No. 2 and 3 doubles teams. The two wins proved to be the difference.

William Urquilla knocked in a free kick to give Granada Hills a 2-1 win over Chatsworth in a West Valley League game at home.

With the win, Granada Hills (7-2) moved into a first-place tie with Chatsworth (7-1-2).

Chatsworth took an early lead when Ray Hodge of Granada Hills inadvertently kicked the ball into his own team’s goal.

Granada tied the game on Mark Hurlimann’s goal eight minutes into the half.

The Taft boys cross-country team placed three runners in the top four and won the Mid-Valley League championship at Pierce College.

Marlon Rodriguez of Taft won the individual championship running 16:25.

Chatsworth was second and Reseda was third.

Sean Goldberg scored three goals to lead El Camino Real past Reseda, 3-1, in a West Valley League soccer game.
