Prep Football Playoffs : Marina Surprises Unbeaten, Top-Rated Bishop Amat, 33-12

Huntington Beach Marina High School upset previously undefeated La Puente Bishop Amat, The Times’ Southern Section No. 1 team, 33-12, Saturday night in a Big Five Conference playoff game at Westminster High.

Marina (8-3-1), which held a 14-12 lead at halftime, got a third-quarter touchdown on Sean Magula’s 50-yard run, then broke the game open with two fourth-quarter scores.

Magula finished the game with 165 yards in 17 carries. Marina limited highly-touted Bishop Amat running back Eric Bieniemy to 45 yards in 15 carries.

The win completed a sweep of games this weekend for the Sunset League.

Edison, co-champion of the Sunset League with Marina, and Westminster, the third team in the Sunset League, each won quarterfinal games Friday and will play each other next Friday. Marina will play Long Beach Poly in the other semifinal game.

In the Southern Conference, Orange El Modena defeated Mission Viejo Capistrano Valley, 33-10, at Capistrano Valley High.

El Modena (10-1), No. 2 in the Century League, will play Santa Ana (8-4), the No. 3 team, in the semifinals Friday night.

Ross Bauer powered the El Modena attack, gaining 208 yards in 35 carries, scoring two touchdowns and passing for a third. Teaming with Bauer was quarterback Chris Gallego, who completed 12 of 21 pass for 165 yards and one touchdown.

In the Central Conference, La Habra (10-2) defeated visiting Artesia, 13-10, and will be matched against Saddleback in the semifinals. Earlier this season, Saddleback defeated La Habra, 34-0.
