Girls’ Prep Basketball Roundup : Savanna Easily Moves Into Irvine Semifinals With Win Over University

The Savanna High School girls’ basketball team earned its way into the semifinal game of the Irvine tournament Wednesday by beating University, 52-14.

Rebel guard Venetta Dorlis scored 17 points, and the front line dominated the boards as forwards Dee Dee Shephard and Marlo Ogden and center Teisha Clark combined for 31 rebounds. Savanna used its press to take a 31-5 advantage by halftime. Rebel Tammy Burns came off the bench to contribute 8 rebounds and 6 points.

In other Irvine tournament action:

Edison 62, La Quinta 58--The Chargers (2-0) received a well-balanced offensive effort asDenise Ogburn scored 14 points, Stacee Johnson had 13 and Kris Herman had 11. La Quinta was led by center Jane Utu’s 21 points. The Chargers held a 32-27 lead at the half.

In the Fullerton tournament:

Valencia 42, El Modena 24--The Tigers’ fullcourt pressure defense made scoring difficult for the Vanguards in this first-round game. Valencia center Ronette McWeeney scored 15 points, and guard Angela Granger played a fine all-around game, adding 8 points. The Tigers play Fullerton tonight at 7:30.

Fullerton 47, Rosary 29--Forward Vicki Silva led the Indians with 22 points and 12 rebounds. The Fullerton guards also played well as Noelle Heusser had four assists and Heidi Shikuma had five steals. Rosary guard Shelly Morinssey scored 10 points and forward Cari Garcia had nine.
