Camarillo Gets to Quarterfinal

Camarillo High held off a second-half rally to defeat Bishop Montgomery, 58-51, Tuesday in the opening round of the Beverly Hills High Basketball Tournament.

With the win, the Scorpions advance to the quarterfinal round against Crossroads tonight.

Bishop Montgomery guard Don Koran sank three straight jump shots to cut a Scorpions lead to 23-19 with 6:41 left in the first half. Camarillo senior forward Mitch Parrott, who is averaging 33 points in two games, then scored two baskets and teammate Mike Biggs added another that lifted the Scorpions’ lead to 27-19.

The Knights capitalized on four straight Camarillo turnovers and trailed by one at the half, 28-27.

Camarillo missed several shots close to the basket and turned the ball over eight times, allowing the Knights to close the gap at the end of the third quarter, 38-35.

With 1:54 remaining in the game, a basket by Bishop Montgomery’s Brian Dellamico kept the Knights close at 51-47, but Camarillo’s Parrott sank two baskets and a free throw to secure the Scorpions’ win.

Crossroads 59, Royal 53--Royal led, 28-25, at the half, but Crossroads guards Marc Rudolph and Keith Davis scored 14 and 12 points in the second half to lead the comeback.

Senior forward Mike Woods led the Highlanders with 18 points. Royal will face Bishop Montgomery Thursday night in the consolation bracket.

Buena 68, Saugus 58--Buena had a 10-point lead by the end of the first quarter and maintained the advantage throughout the first-round game.

The loss moves the Centurions into tonight’s consolation game against Ventura.
