Torrey Pines Wins Girls’ Soccer Title

Torrey Pines and Mission Bay high schools and The Bishop’s School were the winners Saturday in the three championship matches of the sixth annual Raiders-Coca Cola Girls’ Soccer Tournament at Southwest High School.

Torrey Pines, which has won all four San Diego Section 3-A championships, beat Poway, 5-2, in the Unlimited Division. Kathleen Cassidy scored two goals for Torrey Pines.

Mission Bay, the defending 2-A champion, beat Southwest, 3-1, in penalty kicks in the Limited Division. After the teams tied, 1-1, through regulation and overtime, Lorena Aviles, Hayley Colburn and Christine Flanagan converted penalty kicks for Mission Bay. Colburn, the Buccaneers’ goalie, stopped three of Southwest’s four attempts.

In the Classified Division, Bishop’s blanked the Mt. Carmel junior varsity, 2-0. Bishop’s goalie Kim Jernigan recorded the shutout.

Erin Holman, Torrey Pines’ sweeper, was named Most Valuable Player in the Unlimited Division. Mission Bay’s Kori Rucker was Limited MVP, and Stacy Lopez of Bishop’s was Classified MVP.
