Pallares, Gibson, Witte Honored by The Times at Awards Ceremony

Valencia High School running back Ray Pallares, who became the state’s all-time career rusher with 5,398 yards during a standout, three-year career, was named The Times’ Back of the Year Sunday at an awards ceremony in the Anaheim Hilton Hotel.
Don Gibson, El Modena’s two-way tackle for three seasons, was named Lineman of the Year. Gibson helped the Vanguards win two Southern Conference titles during his career.
Jerry Witte, who led Saddleback to the Central Conference title with a 13-1 record, was named Coach of the Year.
The 23 players who were named to the all-county first team, their parents and coaches were honored at the brunch. The guest speaker was Lt. General Winfield W. Scott, Jr., superintendent of the U.S. Air Force Academy.
