Boys’ Prep Basketball Roundup : Fountain Valley Defeats Costa Mesa in First Round

Guard Todd Hanson scored 22 points and forward Tim Johnson added 17 to lead Fountain Valley High School to an 80-58 victory over Costa Mesa, Monday in the first round of the Irvine Tournament.

Playing at Irvine High School, The Barons had a two-point lead at halftime but then outscored the Mustangs, 46-26.

Costa Mesa guard Mitch Pelichowski led all scorers with 40 points.

Fountain Valley is 4-2.

In other Irvine Tournament action:

El Toro 53, Don Lugo 50--Bret Johnson scored a game-high 17 points and Jeff Stone added 15 as the Chargers held off Don Lugo in a first-round game at UC Irvine. With Don Lugo leading, 48-47, Johnson hit a jump shot and sank a pair of free throws on successive times downcourt to put El Toro ahead, 51-48, with 45 seconds left. El Toro evened its record at 3-3.

Saddleback 73, Artesia 59--Roadrunner guard Bryant Walton scored 30 points, had 10 assists and 11 rebounds to lead Saddleback (3-1) to this first-round victory. Gylan Dottin added 14 points and 9 rebounds for the Roadrunners.

Mission Viejo 53, Los Amigos 35--Tim Knowles scored 19 points and Jeff Herdman added 11 as the Diablos advanced to the second round. Guard Geno Howard led Los Amigos with 12 points.

MISSION VIEJO (53)--Knowles 19, Herdman 11, Pedersen 6, Mathews 4, Bartlett 6, Brown 1, Billips 4, Stringher 2.

Orange 65, Corona 48--The Panthers started quickly, outscoring Corona, 16-2, in the first quarter. Orange forward Dave Roth scored 18 of his game-high 24 points in the first half. Forward Dan Adams added 12 points for Orange (3-2).

University 60, Magnolia 47--Steve Stolzoff led the Trojans with 15 points and Eric Olin and Tim Warren both added 13 in this first-round game at University. Bill Czech led the Sentinels with 13 points.

John W. North 64, Canyon 55--Eric Brown scored 18 points and Robby Washington added 17 to lead the Huskies to the win. Canyon’s Ralph Garcia led all scorers with 20 points.

Irvine 56, Santiago 41--Guard Mike Herring scored a game-high 27 points to lead the Vaqueros to the first round win. Rick Burns led Santiago in scoring with 16 points.

Rancho Alamitos 70, Moreno Valley 58--Roger Carter scored 25 points and had 17 rebounds to lead the Vaqueros (3-3). Randy Morales and center Lee Velasquez added 21 and 12 points, respectively. Velasquez blocked seven shots.

Western 50, Tustin 48--The Pioneers outscored the Tillers, 11-9, in the final quarter to take the first-round game at Woodbridge. Troy Joseph led Western (2-2) with 16 points and Chuck Powell added 11. Kevin Anderson led Tustin with 24 points and Leo Parker had 13.

Marina 75, Savanna 44--Steve Guild and Mike Meyers combined for 45 points as the Vikings scored an easy first-round win against the Rebels at University. Guild led all scorers with 23 points and 10 rebounds and Meyers added 22 points. Mike Campbell led Savanna with 16 points and Frank Smith chipped in with 15.

Woodbridge 63, Laguna Hills 43--Mike Murphy (15), Adam Keefe (13), Vince Bryan (13) and Mike Sullivan (10) all scored in double figures for the Warriors in a first-round win at Woodbridge. Joe Moravick led the Hawks with 13 points.

In the La Quinta Tournament:

Huntington Beach 46, Santa Ana Valley 41--Steve Pemper scored 15 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Oilers to a first-round victory. Shawn Jensen added 12 points and Scott Moberly had 10 for Huntington Beach (2-4). Santa Ana Valley (2-2) was paced by Alonzo Jamison’s 18 points and 11 rebounds.

La Quinta 53, West Torrance 52--Ari Buford hit a jump shot with 40 seconds left to give the Aztecs the lead. Buford made 10 of his 12 attempts from the floor and finished with 21 points. John Kao led the Warriors with a game-high 22 points.

WEST TORRANCE (52)--Kao 22, Carlson 8, Noa 7, Hocking 3, Ellwood 10, McMullen 2.
