Girls’ Basketball : Ogburn’s 24 Points, Free Throws Help Edison to Runnin’ Rebel Crown

Denise Ogburn scored a game-high 24 points and Edison High School survived a fourth-quarter scare by Mater Dei to post a 70-66 victory Friday night to win the Runnin’ Rebel Tournament at Savanna High.

Edison led by as much as 13 points early in the fourth quarter, but Mater Dei whittled the lead down to one point with three minutes to play. Edison, which made 15 of 17 free throws in the second half and 18 of 24 in the game, kept making its free throws down the stretch to secure the win.

Kristen Wilson added 16 points and 12 rebounds and Michelle Hennessey had 13 points for the Chargers (9-1).

Hollie Formaneck led the Monarchs with 22 points, Geri Gainey had 18 and Noelle Manfre added 13.

Ogburn, a junior guard, was named the tournament’s MVP.

In the Canyon Tournament:

Valencia 52, Canyon 29--Ronnette McWeeney scored 11 points to lead the Tigers (7-1) to the tournament championship. Lila Naffa scored nine points to pace the Comanches (5-2).

Kennedy 49, Santiago 25--Ursula Lovely, a 5-8 junior forward, scored 22 points to lead the Fighting Irish to the consolation championship and was named the tournament MVP. Shannon Alexandro had 17 for the Cavaliers.

In the Bolsa Grande Tournament:

Homestead 41, La Mirada 39 (OT)--Heather McPherson sank a pair of free throws with five seconds left in overtime to give Homestead of San Jose the tournament championship. Julie Szukalski led Homestead with 21 points and was named tournament MVP. Tricia Gibson led the Matadores with 19 points.

Bolsa Grande 38, Rancho Alamitos 16--Doreen Day scored 16 points and Sandy Martin grabbed 19 rebounds to lead the Matadores (3-4) to the third-place title. Lynn Egan led the Vaqueros with 6 points.

In nonleague action:

San Clemente 35, Laguna Beach 31--Junior Lynne Kristoffersen and sophomore Kelly Patterson each scored eight points to lead the Tritons (4-3) by the Artists at San Clememte.
