It took the better part of the game, but Ocean View High School finally got its running game going against host Marina Friday night and streaked to a 74-63 Sunset League win.

The Seahawks (3-0, 13-4) outscored the Vikings (1-2, 11-8), 24-15, in the fourth period, most of those points coming off Ocean View’s transition offense. Center Ricky Butler keyed the Ocean View attack. Four times in the period he grabbed a defensive rebound and threw a strong outlet pass to a Seahawk player waiting at halfcourt. The Seahawks scored on each of those plays.

“That’s our game, we’re at our best when we’re running,” Ocean View Coach Jim Harris said. “We finally got it going. Ricky made some good passes in the fourth, but he made some bad ones early on. I don’t think he had his best game.”

Butler ended the game with 18 points. Forward Tony Panzica also had 18 for Ocean View.

The Seahawks entered the fourth quarter with a 50-48 lead, which disappeared 20 seconds into the period when Marina center Mark Georgeson made a 10-foot jump shot to tie the score.

It took only seven seconds for Ocean View to regain the lead as Butler slipped through a crease in the Marina zone and made a 12-foot jump shot. In the next three minutes, Ocean View outscored Marina, 12-5, to open a 64-55 lead.

Marina made a slight comeback over the next minute and a half, drawing within seven at, 68-61, with 1:10 remaining. But Ocean View guard Blaine DuBrouwer scored 6 points in the next 30 seconds to put the Seahawks up, 72-61, and assure them the win. DeBrouwer ended the game with 17 points.

Georgeson scored 15, all from inside. A 6-foot 9-inch junior, Georgeson was one of the big reasons that Ocean View’s running game sputtered for three quarters. With Georgeson, Marina had 10 offensive rebounds in the first half.

“They killed inside on their end,” Harris said. “Georgeson was just phenomenal. We couldn’t get the ball to outlet. I thought he played great.”

If Georgeson was slowing down the Seahawks, Marina guard Mike Meyers attempted to run right by them. Meyers scored 21 points, many coming on drives that he created for himself.

Meyers, who normally plays the off-guard position for Marina, started at point because Bill Craft, the Vikings regular point guard, is out with sprained knee.

MARINA (63)--Georgeson 15, Guild 4, Meyers 21, Hattabaugh 8, Quinn 16, Martin 1.
