Salvador Rivera scored the winning goal on a 20-yard shot with two minutes remaining Thursday night as Belmont High School upset top-ranked Bell, 2-1, to win the City soccer championship at Garfield High.
Ramon Salgado’s goal 25 minutes into the game gave Bell (13-2-2) the lead, but Belmont (15-1-2) came back to tie the game in the second half on a goal by Edward Campos. Rivera’s late goal gave sixth-ranked Belmont its first-ever soccer title.
Bell’s Waldir Guerra, who has scored a national-record 120 goals in his high school career, was tightly marked throughout the game by Belmont defenders.
