Chapman Goes Cold in Loss to Bakersfield, 71-65

The Chapman College men’s basketball team held a 38-36 halftime advantage at Cal State Bakersfield Saturday but was outscored, 23-9, in a 10-minute span of the second half and lost the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. game, 71-65.

The Panthers led, 49-43, with 12 minutes left, but the Roadrunners (3-2, 12-6) surged ahead with 11 straight points as the Panthers missed four outside shots.

Roadrunner Jeff Hughes had six points during the rally, and Neil Stephens added five as Bakersfield took a 54-49 lead. The Panthers (1-4, 5-12) pulled back to within a point at 54-53, but Bakersfield fended them off and went ahead, 66-58, with two minutes left.

Leonard Brown scored 11 of his 19 points in the second half for the Roadrunners. The Panthers were led by Kelly Huston’s 18 points, and Mike Kelly added 12. Chapman forward Karl Tompkins had eight rebounds.
