John Liebengood, assistant football coach at Lynwood High School, has been named coach at Estancia High School, replacing Ed Blanton, who retired following last season.

Liebengood, 35, has been defensive coordinator at Lynwood since 1980, when the Knights last won the CIF Southern Section Southern Conference championship. Lynwood has posted a 50-10-1 record since Liebengood has been an assistant.

“He’s a real energetic guy willing to put a lot of time into the program,” Estancia Athletic Director Art Perry said. “Plus he’s local--he lives five minutes away in Newport Beach.

According to Perry, Liebengood was chosen from a field of 22 candidates to lead the Estancia football program back to respectability. The Eagles had three straight losing seasons before going 5-5 last fall.

In the late 1970s, Liebengood spent four years at Boron High School, two of those as head coach, and during that time won two league titles and compiled a 35-3 record.
