San Diego Prep Wrestling : Poway and Valhalla Win Section Championships

The San Diego Section 3-A wrestling tournament went according to form Saturday night at Mira Mesa High School as Poway easily claimed its fifth straight section championship.

The Titans compiled 277 points to easily outdistance runner-up Mount Miguel (182 1/2). Rounding out the top five were Monte Vista (178), Granite Hills (175 1/2) and Mount Carmel (104).

Poway had 10 wrestlers in the finals (there are only 13 weight classes) and seven of them won individual titles. The only honor the Titans didn’t win was outstanding individual wrestler, which went to Tim Briggs of Granite Hills, the champion in the 140-pound division.

Heavyweight--Jesse Naputi (Mount Miguel).

In the 2-A tournament, Valhalla won its third straight champion at El Camino. The Norsemen scored 219 points and host El Camino was a distant second with 169 1/2.

Also in the top five were Grossmont (131), Orange Glen (128) and San Marcos (111).

El Camino’s John Grubbs, the 101-pound champion, was the outstanding individual wrestler after registering three pins and one technical fall.
