SOUTHERN SECTION SOCCER PLAYOFFS : Calabasas Tunes In and Shuts Out Yucaipa in 1-A

So it’s not the greatest show on earth, but the annual lip-sync contest at Calabasas High--where students mimic their favorite rock stars--might be one of the most popular. The shows Wednesday night and tonight sold out 600 seats in four days.

John Reich, the Calabasas soccer coach, has seven team members practicing for the affair.

“I want to see how fresh they’ll be,” Reich said. “They’ll probably be dying on stage.”

Maybe not. The Coyotes took time out from their show-business schedule and barely worked up a sweat Wednesday afternoon in a 2-0 win over Yucaipa in the Southern Section 1-A quarterfinals.

Calabasas (16-5-3), ranked fourth, could have called it a wrap early, but the hot-passing Coyotes couldn’t get a shot into the net. Despite being upstaged, Yucaipa (16-4-1) managed to keep the first half scoreless.

But the second half merely had to begin for all that to change. Poe Allen, the Coyotes’ leading scorer, took the ball downfield on the first possession, dribbled past one defender and fired in his 14th goal of the season.

Brad Bookbinder added another goal midway through the half. Brian Sandweiss got the assist on a head pass.

Boys 1-A Division

Agoura 3, Capistrano Valley Christian 1--Rob Sahm scored twice to lead top-ranked Agoura (19-1-2) in the 1-A quarterfinal. Teammate Dave Hill added the other goal for Agoura.

Girls 1-A Division

Agoura 2, Temple City 0--Tracy Matson scored on an assist by Julie Tingle, and Tracy Redman scored on a pass by Amy Ward to lead top-ranked Agoura to the quarterfinal win.

Agoura is 19-0-2. Temple City is 13-6-1.

Oak Park 3, La Serna 1--Kathy Greenhalgh scored a goal and had an assist to lead the sixth-ranked Eagles (13-5-0) in the quarterfinals. Erin McAnally and Stacy Wise each scored a goal, and LeAnn Cahill had an assist for Oak Park.

Oak Park will visit third-ranked Monrovia on Tuesday in a semifinal game.
