Newport Harbor Wins, 15-0, Scoring 13 Runs in First Inning

Newport Harbor High School scored 13 runs in the first inning Saturday and went on to rout Costa Mesa, 15-0, in a rain-shortened Santa Ana-Newport Mesa baseball tournament consolation game.

The Sailors (2-4) sent 18 hitters to the plate in the first inning, which was highlighted by Tony Wren’s two-run homer. Wren was 2 for 2 in the inning with four runs batted in. Newport Harbor’s Brad Zenz also went 2 for 2 and knocked in three runs. Jon Mahoney (1-2) was credited with the win. Costa Mesa fell to 2-3. The game was called in the bottom of the third inning.

In other prep baseball action:

Rain postponed the final round of the Loara Tournament. The games will be rescheduled but a date has not been set.

El Dorado was scheduled to meet Loara in the championship game, Magnolia and Los Alamitos were to play for third place, Katella was set to face Esperanza for fifth place and St. Paul was scheduled to play Cypress for the consolation championship.

In softball action:

Fullerton 4, Long Beach Poly 2--Indian pitcher Cindy Michik struck out 10 batters in the nonleague game, which was delayed twice and stopped in the sixth inning because of rain.
