Community College Basketball Tournament : It Doesn’t Get Any Easier for L.A. Harbor in Finals

Los Angeles Harbor College already has eliminated the No.1 team from the state playoffs, but the Seahawks still have some difficult times ahead in the community college state basketball tournament.

The Seahawks upset No. 1 Cerritos, 74-67, in the second round, but will face the state’s No. 2 team at 9 tonight in the first round of the championship finals.

L.A. Harbor (21-11) meets City College of San Francisco (29-2) at Cerritos College in one of four games tonight.

The Seahawks are led by 6-foot 7-inch center Kelvin Tyes, who averages 20.4 points and 10.2 rebounds a game.

Golden Gate Conference champion San Francisco is led by sophomore center Dean Garrett, (San Clemente High School) who is averaging 19.3 points and 10 rebounds a game. Teammate Edward Allen is averaging 18.9 points a game. The Rams have been in the state finals 11 times, but they have not won the title since 1962.

The tournament is made up of four teams each from the northern and southern divisions. The teams qualified for the final eight in regional competition over the last two weeks. The first-round winners advance to the semifinals on Friday, starting at 6:30 p.m. The final is scheduled for Saturday night at 7:30 p.m.

In other first-round action, Pasadena (23-10) plays in the 3 p.m. game against Sacramento (23-7); in the 5 p.m. game, Contra Costa (28-6) meets Santa Barbara (20-10) and Los Angeles Southwest (28-4) plays Skyline (24-6) at 7.
