Orange County Prep Baseball : Laguna Hills’ Helm Pitches Second No-Hitter of Season

Laguna Hills High School right-hander Wayne Helm threw his second no-hitter of the season Saturday afternoon as the Hawks defeated Trabuco Hills junior varsity, 8-0, in the first game of a nonleague doubleheader at Laguna Hills.

Helm struck out a season-high 14 and walked 2. Dave Shetland and Sean Hardy each had three hits and two RBIs in the first game.

Shetland, Chris Latham and Jay Christensen each had two hits and an RBI as Laguna Hills completed the sweep over the Mustangs with a 10-1 win in the second game.

In other nonleague action:

Brea-Olinda 15-5, Riverside Poly 5-7--David Kain homered in the first with two on, and Mike Bogosian and Russ Barns each had two-run singles to as the Wildcats scored 12 in the first inning of the opener. Steve Chacon (1-0) was the winning pitcher for Brea-Olinda.

Marina 11, Artesia 5--Mike Huyler was 3 for 3 with a double, triple and home run and had six RBIs for the Vikings (5-6). Matt Hattabaugh also tripled for Marina. Mark Guedea (1-2) got the win.

In Santa Ana Elks Tournament action:

Saddleback 1, Foothill 0--Neil Carter doubled home the only run in the second inning and Jeff Rowe made it stand for the the Roadrunners (5-5). David Fox took the loss for the Knights (5-3). Saddleback advances to play Irvine Monday in the quarterfinals; Foothill plays Orange.

Irvine 8, Orange 6--Brian Snoddy struck out seven in three innings of relief, and teammate Bobby Hamelin hit a three-run homer in the sixth. Steve Hambermel hit a two-run single in the top of the seventh for Irvine (7-4).

El Toro 2, El Modena 0--Senior left-hander Richard Faulks (4-1) pitched a three-hitter at Santa Ana High School. Adam Brass singled home his brother Eric, in the first and Greg Payne’s single scored the other run for El Toro (6-7). The Chargers play Santa Ana Monday in the quarterfinals.

Santa Ana 6, Long Beach Jordan 0--Fred Barrios picked up the win and Jaime Franco had two hits to lead the Saints. Jordan plays El Modena Monday.

Katella 10, Santa Ana Valley 1--Darren Okuda hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning for the Knights (9-2-1). Okuda was 2 for 3 with four RBIs. Rick Sanchez pitched the first five innings for the win. The Knights (9-2-1) play Banning Monday and the Falcons (4-6) play Los Alamitos.

Banning 3, Los Alamitos 2--The Griffins (6-5) lost to the Pilots (4-2) at Hart Park.

Garden Grove 2, Villa Park 1--The Argonauts scored one run on a single by Mark Kiefer and the second on a walk. Mark Rosenthal made his first start of the season and went the distance for the win. Garden Grove (5-1) plays Mission Viejo at noon Monday at Rancho Santiago College.

Mission Viejo 6, Long Beach Millikan 4--The Diablos advanced to the quarterfinals and the Rams play Villa Park .

In West Anaheim Lions Club Tournament action:

Canyon 12, Long Beach Poly 0--Larry Hoeck (2-0) and Scott Denissen combined to throw a two-hitter for Canyon (5-4).

In Loara Tournament consolation action:

Fountain Valley 6, John W. North 4--Chris Neria was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and teammate Jim Dolye was 2 for 3 with one RBI to lead the Barons.

In Angelus League action:

Bishop Montgomery 10, Mater Dei 8--The Knights scored three runs in the sixth inning to erase an 8-7 Monarch lead. Mike Kelly was 2 for 3 with two RBIs, and teammate Jim Austin was 2 for 4 with two runs for Mater Dei (1-2, 5-3).
