Prep Baseball Roundup : Snyder’s Triple Leads Capistrano Valley

Brett Snyder hit a bases-loaded triple to highlight a five-run fifth inning Monday as Capistrano Valley High School rallied to defeat Pacifica, 11-6, in the semifinals of the Bolsa Grande Easter tournament at Bolsa Grande High School.

The Cougars, who will meet La Quinta at 1:30 p.m. for the tournament championship, trailed, 6-1, in the third inning but went ahead, 8-6, in the fifth. Marcel Durand also went 3 for 3 with three RBIs for defending tournament champion Capistrano Valley (6-4).

In other semifinal action:

La Quinta 9, Rancho Alamitos 1--Troy Paulsen hit two home runs and had four RBIs to lead the Aztecs at Rancho Alamitos High. Winning pitcher Joey Dunn allowed seven hits and struck out six in six innings, as La Quinta (5-6) won its third straight game.

In consolation semifinal action:

Artesia 22, Bolsa Grande 6--The Pioneers got 15 hits en route to the easy win at Pacifica. Sophomore pitcher Mark McAsee (1-1) picked up the win. Bolsa Grande’s Mike Valdez went 2 for 4. Artesia (7-6) advances to today’s consolation final at Pacifica. Bolsa Grande is 5-5.

Santa Fe 5, Los Amigos 1--The Lobos managed just three hits off the Chiefs and dropped to 2-9. Santa Fe will play Artesia at 1:30 today at Pacifica High for the consolation championship.

In fifth-place semifinal action:

Santiago 9, La Mirada 3--Santiago combined two hits, three stolen bases and two La Mirada errors to score five runs in the fifth inning en route to the win at Pacifica. Tim Reynolds got the complete-game win for the Cavaliers (7-3), allowing six hits and striking out six. Reynolds and Anthony Candales and two hits each for Santiago.

ANGELUS LEAGUE

Servite 9, Mater Dei 2--Jay Speidel was 3 for 4 with two RBIs and scored two runs as the Friars remained unbeaten (4-0) in league play. Craig Barkely (2-1) pitched four innings to get the win, with relief help from James Ferguson. Mike Kelly went 2 for 3 for Mater Dei (1-3, 5-4).

ACADEMY LEAGUE

Cal Lutheran 10, St. Michaels 3--Andrew Mahnke threw a complete-game, three-hitter and struck out 10 to lead Cal Lutheran to the win at El Toro Community Park. Siegler’s two-run triple keyed a five-run first inning for the Sea Hawks (2-1).

POMONA ELKS TOURNAMENT

In consolation action:

Western 4, Edgewood 1--Rich Lodding pitched a complete-game, two-hitter and struck out 10 to lead the Pioneers at Ralph Welch Park in Pomona. Freshman Doug McConathy hit a two-run triple in the third inning and Paul Boucher had a hit and two RBIs.

Western 12, Chaffey 2--Western (9-3) scored all of its runs in one inning in the five-inning consolation semifinal. Bob Noson (1-0) went all the way in his first varsity start. Chaffey is 4-8.

NORTH SANTA BARBARA COUNTY TOURNAMENT

In championship semifinal action:

Capistrano Valley Christian 7, Whittier Christian 4--Keith Patefield’s third-inning grand slam gave the Eagles a 5-4 lead and pitcher Dave Wyckoff shut down Whittier Christian from there. Capistrano Valley Christian (3-4) will meet Cabrillo in the championship game today at 2:30.
