College Tennis : Chapman Moves Closer to Title

Chapman College moved a step closer to a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. tennis championship Saturday, defeating Cal State Bakersfield, 8-1, in a conference match at Bakersfield.

The Panthers (9-0, 18-8), No. 1 in Division II, have won 14 straight conference matches in the past two seasons. A win today over Cal Poly San Luis Obispo--the last team to defeat Chapman in a conference match--would clinch the title for the Panthers.

Chapman’s Troy Turnbull defeated Rick Hagenbuch, 2-6, 7-5, 6-3, in No. 1 singles. Chapman’s Olivier Amerlinck defeated Rich Titus, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6, in No. 3 singles.

In other men’s action:

UC Irvine 6, Fresno State 3--Bruce Man Son Hing lost in No. 1 singles but teamed with Darren Yates in No. 1 doubles to defeat Jean Le Clercq and Chris Gerety and lead the Anteaters (3-1, 15-9) to a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. win. Man Son Hing lost to Le Clercq, 6-1, 6-4. Man Son Hing and Yates defeated LeClercq and Gerety, 1-6, 7-6, 6-4. Yates defeated John Soto, 7-5, 6-4, in No. 2 singles, and Irvine’s Ken Durr defeated Eric Seigle, 6-1, 7-5, in No. 3 singles.

Utah State 6, Cal State Fullerton 3--The Titans (2-16) lost for the second time in two days. Friday, it was an 8-1 drubbing by Nevada Las Vegas. Saturday, the Aggies won all but two of the singles matches. Fausto Bucheti did win at No. 1 singles for the Titans, defeating Tony Greer, 6-0, 6-1.

In women’s action:

UC Irvine 7, Fresno State 2--Stephanie Rhorer led the Anteaters (12-13) at Fresno with a 6-4, 6-2, win over Julie Frasier in No. 1 singles. Irvine’s Haruko Shigekawa defeated Jenny Davies, 7-6, 6-1, in No. 2 singles.
