Tasso, Mogambo Head Seven Entries for Wood Memorial

Tasso, one of seven 3-year-olds entered, drew the No. 4 post position Thursday and was installed as the 7-5 favorite for Saturday’s $250,000 Wood Memorial at Aqueduct.

Mogambo, who finished two lengths ahead of a bothered but late-closing Tasso in the Gotham Stakes at Aqueduct on April 5, was made the 8-5 second choice by the track linemaker.

The field, in post-position order, consists of Glider Pilot, with no jockey listed; Groovy, with Craig Perret riding; Broad Brush, Vince Bracciale; Tasso, Laffit Pincay; Tinchen’s Prince, Jose Santos; Mr. Classic, Nick Santagata, and Mogambo, Jacinto Vasquez.

All will carry 126 pounds.

Horse Racing Notes Unexpectedly, trainer Wayne Lukas is running a filly, Family Style, in Saturday’s $500,000 Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Ark. Lukas had been expected to run Clear Choice and Big Play, but now his entry consists of Clear Choice and Family Style, who have been made the 2-1 favorites in the 14-horse field. Only one filly--Lukas’ Althea in 1984--has ever won the Arkansas Derby in its 49 years. Family Style, last year’s 2-year-old filly champion, finished fourth last Saturday in the Fantasy Stakes at Oaklawn . . . Zabaleta is the 2-1 favorite in Saturday’s $200,000 Garden State Stakes in New Jersey. Ten horses are entered . . . In the $200,000 California Derby Saturday at Golden Gate Fields, Vernon Castle is the 9-5 favorite in a field of 11 . . . Another Lukas filly, Lady’s Secret, was upset by Love Smitten Wednesday in the Apple Blossom Handicap at Oaklawn. Love Smitten won by a neck over Lady’s Secret after a long stretch duel. . . . Mister Gennaro, once a medium-priced claimer, ran down Beveled to score a nose victory in the $138,500 Count Fleet Sprint Handicap at Oaklawn Thursday. Mister Gennaro ran the six furlongs in 1:08 4/5, only 2/5 off the stakes record. Mister Gennaro paid $15.80, $7.20 and $3.60. Owner Hobie Alter said he claimed Mister Gennaro for $40,000 two years ago. At that time, the gelded son of Sonic Shuttle was a 3-year-old.
